Injectable Fillers to the Upper Eyelids Due to Aging
Aging Creates Loss of Volume in the Eyes
We have been realizing that a lot of what occurs within the face and the eyelids through the aging process is a loss of volume. The brow and upper lid can lose volume, and as a result, the upper lid can either present with excess skin or actually become even more hollowed out with time. When there is excess skin, surgery can help through upper lid blepharoplasty. However, when there is hollowing present, surgery cannot help improve the lost volume. In such instances, injectable fillers have been able to help improve volume loss around the eyelid area.
Options for Eyelid Rejuvenation
It is important to know that surgery is not the only option available for rejuvenating the upper lids. Surgery can help remove excess skin but people often have other aging changes in the upper lids that surgery alone cannot address. Fillers around the upper lids and eyebrow areas can be carefully placed to help correct the volume loss that people have acquired with time. Volume loss occurs in all people through the aging process, and the eyebrow and upper lids usually lose volume with time. The eyebrows can lose some fullness (loss of the brow fat pad) and some other people have hollowing in the upper lid as well. People may often think they need surgery to help improve their appearance, but surgery cannot improve the volume loss; fillers on the other hand can help. Dr. Zoumalan has had years of experience helping patients improve the appearance of the upper lid with injectable fillers.
Improve the Appearance of the Upper Eyelids
- Dr. Zoumalan is a fellowship-trained Oculoplastic Surgeon who exclusively specializes in cosmetic eyelid surgery.
- He has years of experience with using injectable fillers around the eyelid area, both for treating upper lid hollows and lower lid aging changes (lower lid bags and dark circles treatment with fillers).
- He specializes in advanced, minimally invasive techniques to help improve the appearance.
- He spends time one-on-one with patients to help determine their candidacy for injectable fillers (non-invasive surgery) and/or cosmetic eyelid surgery.
Improve the Appearance of the Upper Eyelids
Dr. Zoumalan uses hyaluronic acid fillers around the periorbital and eyelid areas to help improve the appearance. Depending on the patient and type of fillers used, the results can last usually one to two years. The eyebrows can also be carefully injected with fillers to augment and improve the fullness in certain cases. The procedure involves the use of a blunt-tipped micro-cannula rather than directly injecting with a needle, which helps minimize bruising, swelling, and discomfort. This procedure is done in the office using only topical numbing cream and a local anesthetic injection around the upper lid to maximize comfort. Patients are able to drive home themselves or even return to work. Swelling and bruising are not uncommon, but they are minimized with the use of a blunt-tipped micro-cannula.
